45 Years Ago, Monday Night Football Debuted For the First Time
21 Sep, 2015
Monday Night Football aired for the first time on September 21st, 1970. The show made its debut on ABC and had the New York Jets taking on the Cleveland Browns (Coincidentally, Monday night’s game also featured the Jets, although they took on the Indianapolis Colts).
Although the Jets recorded more yards (454 to 221) and more first downs (31 to 20) during the contest the Browns would win the game 31-21 as New York would turn the ball over 4 times while Cleveland would not cough the ball up once.
The style of play, production value and broadcasting team may have changed drastically but watching the very first Monday Night Football, it is pretty clear that America’s love for the game has not dissipated at all over the past four and a half decades.
If you want to take a trip down memory lane, someone was kind enough to upload the historic first MNF broadcast in its entirety onto YouTube.
