In 1492 Christopher Columbus reached the shores of what we know as the Bahamas today, thus "discovering" the american continent. Today, 517 years later, we continue to celebrate this historic event after President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared in 1937 that October 12 would henceforth be known as Columbus Day. It wasn't until 1971 that Congress declared it a federal public holiday and changed the date of the holiday to the second Monday in October.
