Electrolux Reports Americans Love Their Kitchens

Electrolux surveys Americans and how they use their kitchensSweden-based Electrolux, one of largest manufacturer of European-style appliances and a featured vendor at Fine Lines stores, recently commissioned a national study to learn just how Americans are using their kitchens, and more important, how Americans feel about their kitchens.

The kitchen ain’t just for cooking anymore…

Nearly nine in 10 Americans (86%) are involved in some sort of activity in their kitchen besides cooking such as paying bills, doing work or homework, doing a hobby or craft, reading or playing a game.

More than two thirds of adults (67%) say they use their kitchen to socialize and entertain guests.

One-third of adults spend three to four hours in their kitchen during a typical day, while nearly 20% say they spend five hours or more a day.

My kitchen, my castle…

More than half of Americans (58%) say the kitchen is one of their favorite rooms in their home.

Nearly seven in 10 Americans (69%) agree that they really enjoy spending time in their kitchen.

More than two third of Americans (68%) would rather have a kitchen where they can socialize and spend quality time than a kitchen that is just used for cooking meals.

Nearly half of adults (46%) agree that the kitchen is the center of activity in the household.

Electrolux said kitchen, Americans said…

When Americans were read a list of words and asked which phrases describe what they would like their kitchen to be, nearly nine in 10 said “comfortable” (88%) and “practical” (88%).

One in two (47%), or approximately 104 million adults, say they want a state-of-the-art kitchen.

Nearly nine in 10 of adults (88%) agree that they want the kitchen to be a comfortable place that reflects on their household’s lifestyle.

More than half of Americans (57%) agree that their kitchen should be a reflection of their personal styles and tastes.

Perfect Gift for Fine Lines Kitchen Owners

Gourmet Today, perfect gift for Fine Lines Kitchen ownersRecommended by Wolf and Sub-Zero, every home chef will appreciate Ruth Reichl’s Gourmet Today cookbook, released this fall. As you may recall, Ms. Reichl was the editor of Gourmet Magazine, which announced its closing in October. November 2009 was the last issue.

The cookbook contains over 1,000 Gourmet recipes selected by Ruth Reichl and tested multiple times in the Gourmet test kitchens. Many of the recipes can be prepared in less than 30 minutes.

We know this will not be the last we see of one of America’s favorite culinary editor. In the meantime, enjoy a taste of Ruth Reichl’s wit in this excerpt from a letter to Amazon customers regarding Gourmet Today:

Ruth Reichl, editor of Gourmet MagazineIt's a wonderful time for people who care about food. But it requires a new kind of cookbook, one that takes advantage of the great modern marketplace. Gourmet's twelve test cooks spent five years exploring all the new ingredients available in the supermarkets--from frozen pizza dough to Thai chili pastes and eggroll wrappers--figuring out the best ways to use them. They haunted farmers markets too, so we could offer advice on cooking everything from ramps to celery root. They spent time in fish markets, snapping up new offerings like Arctic char and tilapia. Then they cooked each dish again and again and again, taking out unnecessary steps and ensuring that each was absolutely foolproof. The result is more than a thousand recipes that are absolutely guaranteed to work. I couldn't live without this book. I love cooking from it. I hope you will too.

Best wishes,
Ruth Reichl

Second Kitchens Make Sense for Entertaining from Manhattan to Main Street

Thermador kitchens at Trump Towers
As summer fades into fall, a few moments of daydreaming are inevitable. Thoughts turn to fall entertaining and to the holidays just beyond, and for me, it’s visions of the ultimate kitchen. To add some clarity to the dream, take a look at this luxury condominium at Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue, featuring both a family kitchen and a snack kitchen, priced at $15 million.

Enter on the 48th floor with floor-to-ceiling windows framing a view of Central Park. But don’t get distracted. Today it’s right on to the kitchen. Along with twin dishwashers, a Thermador range, Thermador refrigerator, built-in cappuccino maker, convection oven and steam over, our dream apartment also has a kitchenette upstairs full outfitted with our favorite Thermador appliances.

Now it may not be time to call the realtor, but a second kitchen on an upper or floor or down below alongside a home theater area, can be a useful addition to today’s home. Second, third or even fourth kitchens are a growing trend in new home design and renovation.  Also referred to as satellite kitchens, mini-kitchens or entertaining kitchens, such an addition is no longer relegated to Fifth Avenue.

Entertaining in a satellite kitchenEven the merely affluent are indulging in satellite "mini-kitchens," an increasingly popular option in luxury production homes. A fully equipped second kitchen will add $10,000 to the cost of a new home; for a restaurant-style kitchen, the price tag can run into six figures. Jessica Fabricant, a spokeswoman for high-end residential builder Taylor Woodrow Homes Inc., Laguna Hills, Calif., says, "10% to 15% of the company's clients spend an extra $5,000 to $7,000 for a kitchen outpost that includes a microwave, sink and small refrigerator. "

And it’s no stretch of the imagination that, like a kitchen remodel, a second kitchen will hold its value. If you’re ready for fall inspiration, do visit a Fine Lines showroom. You’ll find Thermador, Wolf, Sub-Zero and the other brands found in luxury homes throughout the country.

High Efficiency Laundry: Part 2

Energy Star® qualified HE washers can save 7,000 gallons of water a year, which over the 11-year lifetime of the washer is enough water to fill up three backyard swimming pools or provide a lifetime of drinking water for six people.

Washers account for more than 20 percent of water used inside the home, so having a HE washer will dramatically reduce energy and water consumption. You’ll not only lower your own utility bills but you’ll also help to protect the environment. That leaves more money in your pocket and makes you feel better about yourself.

The Department of Energy estimates a typical washer will cost $1,100 to operate over its lifetime. An Energy Star® HE washer is estimated to cut your energy and water bills by $50 per year – that’s $550 if you own the washer for 11 years which slices operating costs in half.

HE washers save time since without a bulky agitator there’s more usable space in the tub for laundry – especially for large items like comforters. More capacity means fewer loads of laundry each week.

Clothes look better and last longer with HE washers. Agitators really punish your clothes. Instead of twisting and pulling clothes around a turning agitator, HE top-loaders and front-loaders use sophisticated wash systems to flip or spin clothes through a reduced stream of water, washing your clothes gently. You not only protect your clothes, but you’re saving money too. The approximate value of one load of laundry in an average consumer home is $450, so it makes sense to make sure your clothes last.

Best of all, by using less water and energy HE washers help cut pollution to the environment, reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, and help protect lakes, streams and oceans.
HE washers hold down costs while using less energy. You save money and save the earth. Plus they save you time and protect your clothes. You can’t do laundry any better than that.

And you can find an HE washer in whatever style you’re looking for – they come in a variety of colors, brands and designs with a variety of cycles, options and features.

There’s a lot that’s great about doing laundry with a High Efficiency washer, and there’s a High Efficiency washer that’s perfect for you. Visit the hhgregg Fine Lines showroom near you and learn from the best educated associates in the business.

High Efficiency Laundry: Part 1

The only way you can get out of doing laundry is to keep buying new clothes. But trips to the mall will get old and you’re going to be spending a lot of money.

So, if you’ve got to do laundry, you might as well find a way that’s convenient, that thoroughly and gently cleans your clothes, and cuts energy costs.

High Efficiency (HE) washers do all of that, and more.

Most are larger capacity so you have fewer loads of laundry. They have gentler agitation so there’s less wear on fabric. And, best of all, the HE washers use less energy, which lowers your utility bills.

There are two types of HE washers – front-loading and top-loading. Both save considerably more water than traditional agitator washers.

Front-load washers tumble clothes through less water with no central agitator.
They tumble the laundry back and forth through the water as the tub rotates clockwise and then counterclockwise, moving the water and detergent through each garment and removing soils. This repetitive tumbling motion is intended to do an efficient cleaning and rinsing job and is gentle on fabrics.

Top-load HE washers offer gentle motion to do the laundry, using spinning, rotating and/or “wobbling” wheels, plates or disks to achieve the gentle wash action. They have either no center post or a smaller-size center post instead of a traditional agitator.

Less water is used so clothes dry more quickly.

Ninety percent of the energy used in operating a washing machine goes toward heating the water that will rinse the clothes. And because there’s less water to heat, the HE washers use significantly less energy.

Traditional top-load agitator machines use more than 50 gallons of water per cycle, but HE washers use 50 percent less water and energy – about 18-to-25 gallons per load.

Check back next week for part 2 of our high efficiency laundry post. Until then, visit the hhgregg Fine Lines showroom near you and learn from the best educated associates in the business.

Coming Clean on Washers & Dryers

A washing machine and dryer are one of the longest-lasting appliances in the house — and ones that can make the most difference in energy bills.

How “eco” friendly are they really? Steam or no steam? Steam in the washer and dryer, just steam in the washer, or just steam in the dryer? How does the steam even work? Do you really need the six months supply detergent dispenser? What color? Options abound in teal, red, green, blue, silver, champagne, yellow and even turquoise blue. Gone are the days of only having white as a color option.

The biggest trend in washers and dryers today is the front-load machine. These open from the front, like a commercial washer or dryer at a laundromat. In contrast, a traditional washer opens from the top. How to buy the best machine depends on your space and needs.

Next week will go through some of the features to keep in mind when you are shopping for a clothes washer. Until then, visit the hhgregg Fine Lines showroom near you and learn from the best educated associates in the business.

Coffee Machines: The Brew Generation

"Grande Mocha Latte."
"Tall Carmel Macchiato."

The special requests go on and on, all day, everyday. It’s 7 a.m. at my "favorite on-the–way-to-work coffee hot spot." Watching and listening to every type of person go through what appears to be their normal routine. From executives in ties, to muddied boot construction workers, folks in workout attire, homemakers, and students, they are all paying anywhere from $1.86 for a plain ol’ cup of Java to $6.25 for their very own "frou-frou" creation. The "Brew" generation seems to have taken over the world. As I sip my own $4.86 latte, I wonder why I just spent more on one cup of coffee than I usually do on a lunch.

I asked Clint Pugh of Starbucks, who is one of my favorite "Baristas," to shed some light on this phenomenon. "When thinking on coffee and its growing popularity in our world today, there are a few possible reasons as to why people would spend more money for a good cup of coffee. Perhaps tradition or nostalgia serves as the catalyst. Convenience or habit may even suffice," he said. "I, however, believe it is much simpler. People want a good tasting, quality cup of coffee. They want it the way they like…every time the purchase it. Consistency is the key. "Of course, in our fast paced world convenience is important, but I have found that people will wait a few more minutes than usual to get it consistency with quality."

We have that same philosophy at our store with our electronics and high end appliances. I totally agree with Clint that just like our premium appliances and electronics that we "serve" at our Fine Lines Design Centers, people want the "ultra-premium" cup of coffee. And believe it or not, many consumers today want to be their own "barista", to experience coffee shop quality coffee in the convenience of their own home. With the help of some of our premium vendors, we offer a choice of counter-top and built-in style machines.

The BSH Company (Bosch, Thermador & Gaggeneau) have multiple selections from which the customer can choose. When we first displayed these appliances, I must admit, even I was a bit skeptical when I saw the price. But then I saw where Starbucks was starting to sell their high-end units for more than what better systems that we carry sell for, I was sold. If you are a coffee drinker, you will love the convenience and consistent cups that you can have at the push of "your" own button. If you are not a coffee lover, join the revolution!

Stainless Steel Cleaning Guide

GUIDELINES TO KEEPING STAINLESS STEEL CLEAN

Stainless steel is known for its ability to be a clean surface that resists corrosion and rust, dirt, dust and grime. Luckily, stainless steel responds well to cleaning as long as the following are followed.

PREPARE THE PRODUCT BEING CLEANED: Routine cleaning can be accomplished by using hot soapy water and a clean cotton cloth. This is a good regular option for cleaning stainless steel. Dry with a towel or cloth to prevent water spots. Wipe in the directions of the steels lines.

FINGERPRINT REMOVAL: Since steel holds oils in its grooves it can be a challenge to remove finger prints. Using a household glass cleaner after cleaning the steel can help in removal of Fingerprints.

STAINLESS STEEL CLEANERS, POLISHES & PRESERVATIVES: Most stainless steel products on the market advertise cleaner or polish and some help minimize scratching and remove stains. They also can polish stainless steel surfaces nicely. Read the directions on the stainless steel cleaner and test in an inconspicuous spot. When looking for a quality product, you want to be sure the first ingredient consists of either an oil or petroleum. These ingredients fill the pours of the steel and protect it and help to maintain its luster. Always, be sure to follow the guidelines listed above before using steel products.

Stain Shine is a revolutionary new product for brightening and cleaning stainless steel and other hard surfaces without buffing or polishing. Just spray on and wipe it off for a lustrous last-lasting shine! It removes grease, film and finger marks, and leaves a protective coating. Get it here, or at your local hhgregg finelines or hhgregg store.
