"An Indiana-based company is shaping up as one of the rare Bright Spots in the current retail climate. Hhgregg is doing better than even the company expected. 24-hour News 8 anchor Scott Sanders sat down with hhgregg’s CEO today to find out what’s working.
This is Jerry Throgmartin CEO of a retail rarity – an electronics and appliance chain thriving in a sour economy. According to the company’s early estimates, hhgregg sales managed to rise in the recession’s darkest days – the very same climate that killed a top competitor. Hhgregg seized on its rival’s demise by offering to honor Circuit City gift cards.
The gift card decision aside, Throgmartin says hhgregg’s success is not from bold, new choices, but rather a strong belief in old-school sales. Specifically, hhgregg sales people still approach customers immediately and are eager to offer insight. Throgmartin acknowledges some modern shoppers are unaccustomed to, even uncomfortable with the attention. But, he believes more customers than not appreciate it - especially when buying big-ticket items.
Early returns suggest the strategy is working."
As a result of their success, hhgregg has revised their 2009 4th Quarter Earnings Guidance.
