Electrolux Consolidates U.S. Operations in Charlotte

Electrolux consolidates operations in Charlotte NCElectrolux announced it will consolidate its U.S. corporate office operations and support functions into a single North American headquarters location in Charlotte, N.C.

The move, which will be made gradually starting in summer 2010, is designed to "take advantage of synergies, improve coordination and increase efficiencies," the company said. More than 700 employees will eventually occupy the new Charlotte facility, to be located at 10200 David Taylor Drive in the city's University Area.

"The state, along with the county and city, were very helpful in working with us to find the incentives that made this the right choice for Electrolux," said Kevin Scott, president/CEO of Electrolux Major Appliances North America.

Electrolux and its Frigidaire brand presently maintain major operations in Augusta, Ga., and Cleveland. Electrolux plans to move the largest number of employees from Augusta, though it will keep its 200-employee customer care center there.

Good Financial News for Electrolux

Electrolux Outperforms the Economy
Fine Lines vendor Electrolux posts unexpectedly high third quarter profits.

This week Swedish appliance maker Electrolux, a staple at Fine Lines, announced it had doubled its operating profit in the third quarter, astounding industry analysts. Yet, analysts warned Electrolux to continue with caution in light of weak consumer demand.

Markets responded well: Electrolux shares closed up by 6.7%, to 176.00 Swedish kroner ($25.73) in Stockholm after the firm beat all forecasts for its adjusted operating profit thanks to cost cuts, higher prices and lower raw material costs.

The Wall Street Journal reported Electrolux's resilience in the face of the economic downturn is being driven by its long-running restructuring program, which includes moving production to low-cost countries. It has also forced through price increases for some of its products.

No surprise when Electrolux also announced the closure of two U.S. plants located in Iowa scheduled for the beginning of 2010, both of which produce washing machine and parts. The laundry facilities will be consolidated in Juarez, Mexico. "This is a very difficult decision, and certainly a last resort," Electrolux spokeswoman Blythe Reiss said.

Electrolux's North American major appliance operations are based in Augusta, Georgia. Fine Lines offers the full line of Electrolux kitchen and laundry appliances, all designed with a European flair.
