Optical Zoom vs. Digital Zoom

Thursday, May 7, 2009 by Dustin Checketts
We’ve all done it - snapped what we thought was the perfect shot only to find out that it was blurry or pixilated. One of the many reasons this can happen is through the use of your camera or camcorder’s zoom features. There are two different types of zoom: optical and digital. Understanding the mechanics behind these technologies will help you to become a better photographer and/or videographer.

So what exactly is optical zoom and digital zoom? Optical zoom is what you’re accustomed to seeing with older 35mm cameras. Think of optical zoom as a “true zoom.” The lens physically moves in and out, toward or away from your subject, and there is no quality loss when using optical zoom. Once the optical zoom has reached its physical limit of movement, digital zoom takes over and enlarges the pixel size, causing it to appear as though you’re zooming in further.

That’s optical and digital zoom in a nutshell but what about Smart Zoom? To learn more about optical and digital zoom and to find out what Smart Zoom is, read the Optical Zoom vs. Digital Zoom found in the hhgregg Learning Center.

Get the Most Out of Your HDTV

Thursday, May 7, 2009 by Dustin Checketts
A common misconception about HDTVs is that everything they display will be stunning and beautiful, appearing as they do on the showroom floor. While a HDTV certainly has the potential of looking spectacular, there may be several other components necessary to get that vibrant, detailed, HD picture you’re looking for. Those components are:

• Display (your HDTV)
• Source (e.g., antenna, cable, satellite, DVD player, Blu-ray Disc player, game console, camcorder, etc.)
• Audio (5.1 channel surround sound or better)
• Connectivity (video and audio)
• Environment (e.g., lighting, seating, temperature, etc.)

Get the Most Out of Your HDTVWhether you own a HDTV already or are researching the topic, consider these components as you plan for the HDTV in your home. Many of these components can be added any time, in any order, and on any budget. Take advantage of this knowledge from hhgregg and get the most out of your HDTV.

To read the Get the Most Out of Your HDTV article and many others, check out the hhgregg Learning Center.

Viewfinders vs. LCD Screens

Wednesday, May 6, 2009 by Dustin Checketts
For a long time, viewfinders were the only way to see if your subject was in frame. But with viewfinders, they had a tendency to crop off much as 10% of the image you thought you had captured. You would need to cross your fingers before announcing, “say cheese” and then hope it didn’t mean someone’s head was chopped off.

LCD screens have stormed the market as of late and some cameras/camcorders even display in widescreen (16:9). If LCD screens are so good, then why do some cameras/camcorders have both?
