October is a banner month for hhgregg, opening eight new stores in the Tampa area. hhgregg is proud to join a community focused on sustainability.

The City of Tampa’s Green Office has pledged to help Tampa become a Certified Florida Green Local Government by October of 2010 and coordinate programs that will help the City fulfill its commitment to the U.S. Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement.

The City of Tampa’s Green Programs include:

Greenways and Trails Project
The Tampa Greenway and Trails Master Project will increase public access throughout the City of Tampa to recreation and to non-motorized transportation opportunities.  The system will link parks, schools, transit bus, waterfront, and places of cultural and historical significance. 

The city is organized into six Greenway Areas including:
•    South Tampa - Connecting Picnic Island, The Friendship Bridge Trail, and Bayshore Boulevard.
•    Bayshore Boulevard - Old Tampa Bay to Hillsborough Bay, Hyde Park, Downtown, and Davis Island Beaches.
•    West Tampa - Tampa International Airport and Old Tampa Bay.
•    McKay Bay Greenway - McKay Bay Nature Park and DeSoto Park, Hillsborough County's Bypass Canal Trail.
•    Hillsborough River - Lowry Park, Rowlett Park, Riverfront Park, Rivercrest Park.
•    New Tampa - Flatwoods Park Trail

Increasing Recycling Efforts
Tampa is one of only two cities in the State of Florida that owns a waste-to-energy facility. The city’s McKay Bay Refuse-to-Energy Facility processes more than 300,000 tons of non-recyclable municipal solid waste, which can supply the energy needs of 20,000 homes.

The Yard Waste Recycling Program is currently being expanded; pickup service will be available citywide, in the next few years. Yard waste is recycled to reduce the amount of waste going into the waste stream.

Tampa's Curbside Recycling Program includes weekly curbside recycling service. Residents receive a 14 gallon blue bin with a brochure explaining the program and accepted products (paper, glass, aluminum cans and plastic bottles).

Green Incentives
Tampa Green Fast Track Review is available to anyone wishing to build an environmentally sustainable or "green" project.  Plans may be moved to the "front of the line" for both commercial and residential projects.

hhgregg Coming to Memphis, TN/Southaven, MS

hhgregg will open in another new market this Fall!  The 33,000-square-foot store will be located in the former Circuit City location in the Southaven Towne Center at 6680 Southcrest Parkway. 

"We have a lease out, so we're working through the final details," Vice President of Marketing, Jeff Pearson said. "We're looking at the October/November time frame to be open. We certainly want to be open before Thanksgiving.  We hope to provide a good alternative for consumers looking to shop for the holiday season."

What is Energy Star?

ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices.

 In 1992 the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced ENERGY STAR as a voluntary labeling program designed to identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Computers and monitors were the first labeled products. The ENERGY STAR label is now on over 50 product categories including major appliances, office equipment, lighting, and home electronics. EPA has also extended the label to cover new homes and commercial and industrial buildings.

The typical household spends $1,900 a year on energy bills. With ENERGY STAR, you can save up to 30% or more than $600 per year, with similar savings of greenhouse gas emissions, without sacrificing features, style or comfort. ENERGY STAR helps you make the energy efficient choice.

Results are already adding up. Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved enough energy in 2007 alone to avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 27 million cars — all while saving $16 billion on their utility bills.

Over the past decade, ENERGY STAR has been a driving force behind the more widespread use of such technological innovations as efficient fluorescent lighting, power management systems for office equipment, and low standby energy use.

Recently, energy prices have become a hot news topic and a major concern for consumers. ENERGY STAR provides solutions. ENERGY STAR provides a trustworthy label on over 50 product categories (and thousands of models) for the home and office. These products deliver the same or better performance as comparable models while using less energy and saving money.
