We’ve already discussed important features to consider when upgrading your vacuum. In part two of our Vacuum Buying Guide series, appliance expert James Terry shares his advice on choosing the right vacuum for your lifestyle.

How do you know when it’s time to replace your vacuum?

The lifespan of a vacuum is based on the amount of use it gets and its actual use compared to its intended use. However, if you’re finding that your vacuum is no longer picking up things as it once did and you have cleared any clogs and cleaned any filters, you are probably in the market for a new vacuum.

How do you choose the right type of vacuum for your home and lifestyle?

There are a number of factors to consider when shopping for a vacuum. What type of flooring do you have? If you’re in a place where there is little to no carpeting, you may want to consider a hard floor cleaner. How big is the area you’re maintaining? A smaller area would be OK for a stick vacuum or smaller upright model, but a larger area may command a larger upright unit. Do you have pets? Children? Is your home a single level or multiple?

What types of vacuums are best for households with allergies?

Many vacuums are effective in homes with allergies. In many cases, units with a HEPA filter will do the trick, as with many other home comfort products like air purifiers.

Which vacuums are best on carpet? Hardwood? Tile?

While there are units specialized for hard floors and there are carpet cleaners, an upright or canister with tools for carpet and hard surfaces would be effective on all three surfaces.

What are the best vacuums for low, medium and high price points?

In our assortment, Hoover and Dirt Devil tend to dominate the low price category, Shark occupies the middle ground, and Dyson is in the high end from a price point perspective. However, there are price bands that blur those lines. There are choices to satisfy any budget in our line.

Now that you have a better idea of what to look for, it’s time to find the right vacuum for your home. Browse a selection of vacuums and floor care accessories from the brands you love at hhgregg.
